CTAS Instructor / Pre CTAS Instructor

CTAS Instructor

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a current NENA member.
  • Must have attended the current combined Participant Course within the past 12 months.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of recent emergency triage experience using the NENA CTAS Guidelines.
  • Current and/or previous teaching experience such as TNCC, ENPC, PALS, ACLS or other emergency programming preferred.
Application Process:

Submit the following in a single email to ctas@nena.ca:

  • A current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Proof of current NENA membership. (we require a copy with your membership expiry date)
  • Copy of the Certificate of Attendance from a NENA APPROVED Participant Course taken within the past 12 months.
    ** If the Instructor Candidate is planning to attend the participant course immediately before the instructor course, indicate this in the Application Email and a conditional approval MAY be obtained. Immediately following this course a copy of the Certificate of Attendance must be sent to ctas@nena.ca
  • Letter of recommendation from your Emergency Department manager indicating recent triage experience and teaching ability.
    ***This letter must be on an official letterhead with a signature and title of the ED manager on it.

Once all of the above documents have been received, your application will be reviewed by the NENA Triage Committee for consideration.
Please allow up to 3 weeks for the application to be processed. You may receive an email to clarify application details or you will receive a confirmation or declined email from a NENA Triage Committee member.

ALL communication with the NENA Triage Committee must be sent to ctas@nena.ca as different members cover the incoming emails on different days. This will ensure your email is attended to in a timely manner.

The Instructor Candidate cannot attend an Instructor Course prior to receiving an emailed approval from NENA. Your approval email from ctas@nena.ca will need to be shared with the Instructor Trainer of the Instructor Course prior to you attending.

Completing CTAS Instructor Training:
  • Attend a one day Instructor Course taught by a NENA approved Instructor Trainer within 6 months from being approved as an Instructor. Open Instructor Courses can be found on the nena.ca website under Courses, click CTAS and scroll down to posted courses. (Instructor Courses can be offered virtually) You can connect directly by email with the Instructor Trainer by clicking on their name.
    ***For any further assistance locating a NENA approved Instructor Trainer please contact ctas@nena.ca
  • There is a one-time $90.00 Instructor Candidate activation fee payable to NENA at ctasfinances@nena.ca - Please speak with your Instructor Trainer as to how this fee will be paid to ensure your account is accredited with the payment. This fee must be paid prior to being monitored.
  • Each Candidate will be monitored teaching a Participant Course by a NENA Instructor Trainer within 6 months of completing the Instructor Course, before organizing and providing independent courses. (The Instructor Trainer can attend this course virtually as an option.) If the Instructor Trainer is not able to co-teach a course an alternate Instructor Trainer can monitor the Candidate.
  • Submit the completed and fully signed Instructor Development Checklist and Instructor Candidate Monitoring forms upon completion of being monitored teaching a course and prior to offering independent courses to ctas@nena.ca All appropriate paperwork and fees MUST be received and processed by NENA before the Instructor status is confirmed. Once a new Instructor is confirmed an email will be sent to the new Instructor and the nena.ca Webmaster. The Webmaster will provide access to the Instructor materials on the new Instructor's Membership Profile on the nena.ca website. This will be followed up by a confirmation email from the Webmaster.

Pre-Hospital CTAS Instructor

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must have attended a current Pre-Hospital CTAS Participant Course within the past 12 months.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of recent pre-hospital experience using the NENA CTAS Guidelines.
  • Current and/or previous teaching experience such as PALS, ACLS or other emergency programming preferred
Application Process:

Submit the following in a single email to ctas@nena.ca:

  • A current Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Proof of valid EMS licensure for current year (or NENA membership if applicable but not required for EMS personnel)
  • Copy of the Certificate of Attendance from a Pre-Hospital CTAS Participant Course taken within the past 12 months.
    ** If the Instructor Candidate is planning to attend the participant course immediately before the instructor course, indicate this in the Application Email and a conditional approval MAY be obtained. Immediately following this course a copy of the Certificate of Attendance must be sent to ctas@nena.ca
  • Letter of recommendation from your manager indicating recent triage experience and teaching ability.
    ***This letter must be on an official letterhead with a signature and title of the manager on it.
